Use Total Converter to convert the mp4 files to avi then Vegas will be happy
Hope it helps

Nero was one of the first to use the mp4 in a commercial prog, when you recode DVDs it automatically put it into mp4, so if you have nero you can convert from there.
By compressing the video is the way that they can get so much video onto a hdd i think that is the only format they use.
to be honest you may as well convert your video footage too mpeg, as the original is already compressed, and has lost some quality, converting it to avi will only take up loads of space (huge files) dont use wmv you will not be pleased with the results.
I still use mini dv tape is still the prefered media or direct to pc/laptop (not easy when you are out and about)
good luck
Just my opinion
