Calm down boys...I really don't understand why most of you guys are recommending dSLRs that are WAY out of league for a 'photography newb'.

Do we even know what experience our questioner has with photography? I'm guessing, not much at all.

"Best photography camera" and "i want to start it as a hobby", sort of gives us a clue, don't you think?

Name L...I recommend ANY entry-level dSLR from either Canon or Nikon. If you're serious about learning about photography, don't use Auto shooting mode.

If you don't know what a dSLR is, maybe you should take up knitting as a hobby, instead...

May I ask: what the heck is a "photography camera"?

As opposed to what? Is there another kind of camera?

Okay, so this is SO 2009, but Popular Photography named the Nikon D3x the Camera of the Year.

The bad news is that you will need to spend another few thousand on a couple of lenses to make the body worth anything. The good news is that it still costs a lot less than the Hassie. The bad news is that you have no idea what you are really asking as it make no sense in the world for you to own this camera. If you want "the best" with a few real world considerations, maybe the Nikon D700 is close enough to the top of the heap for you. At least your lenses would still be suitable for the D3x when you are ready for it next year. (ouch)
says:
However, if you can afford the D3X, you will buy yourself the best image detail that's currently on the market and a very versatile photographic tools. We've used it in the studio and on location, for portraits and for sports, in daylight and in dim clubs and and on every occasion we were amazed how easy it was to achieve good results with the camera. Therefore, despite its eye-watering price tag, the Nikon D3X without a shadow of doubt earns itself our highest award.

Summer is downtime for OC waves. But if you want to see some huge waves, check-out the wedge in Newport. It cranks with a SW swell.

Seems Andrew and Nipples BOTH don't know how to spell Hasselblad... Doesn't matter though... it's not the best.

The best camera is the one that satisfies your ambitions, purpose and photographic vision.

There is no best brand (although I agree that the Nikon D3x and D3s are the most supported cameras of all - No lens manufacturer comes even close to Nikkor for support, choice and durability).

I would be hesitant to recommend anything to someone with aspirations.

lots of places pick up the southies... and contrary to what some of the answers are saying... spot matters. some spots are swell magnets. I have been surfing in south OC for years... not going to tell you my favorite spots (sorry but crowds make me angry... lol)... but both will be 4-6 when everywhere else is 2-4.

Newport picks it up good. Blacks, Tamarack (very occasionally)... check out wannasurf.com to view all the surf spots. It will tell you when and where to go
